The characteristics of Zen include both “motion” and “stillness”. It can be of both extreme motion and extreme stillness. Take the earth for example, the earth is a part of Zen. The North and South Poles are always in motion, while the center of earth is motionless. Our senses, however, cannot feel any difference in it at all. We never feel the revolving of the earth even though we are on it at all times, for it is beyond the scope of our human senses.
Entering the realm of the “Zen Method of Wisdom” is like entering the center of the earth; one does not feel anything at all. Just as the center of the earth is full of precious riches, the level of our wisdom is also full of unimaginable treasures. If you want to mine precious minerals, you don’t merely dig into the shallow surface of a hill. To mine coal, we must dig deep into the earth to find coal mines, not to mention gold or diamond mines.
Meditation is the only way we can enter the level of wisdom and dig out its treasures. If we remain only at the level of consciousness and are not able to transcend it, it is like trying to mine treasures in the surface of a hill; we can waste all of our time and never find the treasures hidden deep within.
